The small town is clustered around a magnificent basilica considered to be the most beautiful Gothic building in Provence. Its stocky silhouette catches the eye from as far as you can see the city. According to legend, it is here that Sainte-Marie-Madeleine was buried in the 1st century.

According to tradition, Marie-Madeleine, after having spent long years of penance in the cave of Sainte-Baume, was buried in the crypt of Saint Maximin.

Baume is the Provencal equivalent of "grotto".
